Argumentative Essay # 1: Killing and Letting Die According to James Rachels in his highly acclaimed article The End of Life, Rachels argues that killing and letting die are morally equivalent. My objective within this essay is to highlight and illuminate Rachel’s key points within the The End of Life, which leads him to this particular conclusion. While doing so I will highlight the main objection to Rachels argument, and illuminate my own objections to further prove that Rachels position is false. Before discussing Rachels position a key distinction must be made between active euthanasia and passive euthanasia. Active euthanasia occurs when a doctor or physician uses means to shorten the life of a terminally ill patient, while passive euthanasia occurs when professionals decide to not prolong the patients’ death, therefore they stop treating the patient (Rachels 1986, 107). Active euthanasia is deemed to be illegal within the United States, while passive euthanasia is an accepted practice universally. Rachels argues that since passive euthanasia and killing are morally equivalent that active euthanasia should be legal as well. Within The End of Life, James Rachels central argument is it is morally equivalent to let a person die compared to killing them. The first objection that Rachels exposes is the objection of intention. The objection of intention states that an intention does not matter when you are making a decision in a particular matter.
